Mulago Hospital to Pay 50m for 2015 lost Newborn Baby

Mulago National Referral Hospital has been ordered by the Kampala High Court to give Ms. Fatuma Nakayima Shs50 million as compensation for her newborn baby who went missing on hospital grounds.

The case was presided over by Justice Phillip Odoki, who found Mulago Hospital responsible for the infant boy who had gone missing in December 2015, Nakayima’s newborn.

Nakayima gave birth via C-section on December 26, 2015, after being admitted to ward 5C. She was told by a medical professional that her baby boy had died during delivery. Nakayima, however, was never shown the baby’s body or any documentation of its passing.

Nakayima filed a request with the High Court Civil Division after this ordeal to find out where her baby was.

Seven years of suffering later, Justice Odoki declared that Mulago Hospital had caused Nakayima extreme mental distress and had breached her right to information about her kid, both of which called for compensation.

A police report released last year said there were 261 cases of child theft over 12 months, including those managers who are duped into going abroad for wbut are forced into the sex trade. The police report did not break down the numbers.
