Locals in Bugiri express concern after two mothers give birth outside of a hospital.

Locals in Bugiri express concern after two mothers give birth outside of a hospital.

After two expectant mothers were compelled to give birth outside of Wakawaka Health Centre without the presence of medical staff, residents of Wakawaka Landing Site in Bulindha subcounty, Bugiri district, have expressed worry about the quality of health services in the area.

Their local health facility is facing serious problems, and they are now pleading with the government to take action.

Mercy Nambuya, one of the two moms who gave birth outside the institution, had labor pains and requested to be accompanied to the health center, according to Janet Kauma, her sister.

She adds that their attempts to find a way to get from the institution to Nankoma Health Center 1V were unsuccessful.

According to Kamewo, they continued walking until they arrived at the Wakawaka Health Center at around eight in the morning, at which point the labor pains became more intense and they realized the baby had already been born.

The community began calling various authorities when they were unable to get assistance from a medical professional. Eventually, the mother was saved by an ambulance that was provided by the local RDC, Paul Kalikwani, from Nankoma.

Not long after, a second woman was brought to the center, only to be informed that no health worker was present and that she needed to be taken to Nankoma, which is 20 kilometers away, as she had given birth just 50 meters from the facility.

Residents voiced their worries at an emergency meeting called by the local RDC and his deputy in response to the two events.

The inhabitants claim that although there are two medical personnel at the landing site’s health center II, the population there is still increasing.

They claimed that because the two medical staff members live 20 kilometers away from the institution, it is challenging for patients to receive care there.

The community is now pleading with the authorities to build staff quarters at the institution and augment the number of health workers.
