Uganda Peoples Congress (UPC) chief, Jimmy Akena, has Shown interest for the upcoming 2026 presidential race. Akena made his intentions clear during a consultative meeting held in Kabale Municipality, where he engaged with party leaders from Kabale, Rukiga, and Rubanda districts in the Kigezi sub-region.
Accompanied by key party figures including Fred Ebil, the party secretary-general, and notable MPs Sarah Aguti Dokolo and Apio Otuko, Akena convened a rally in Kabale town before inaugurating UPC’s regional offices along Makanga Road.
Reflecting on the party’s history, Akena highlighted the significance of UPC’s resurgence, citing the last presidential bid in 2011 under the leadership of Olara Otunnu and the groundbreaking candidacy of his mother, Miria Kalule Obote, in the 2006 polls.
Addressing supporters, Akena emphasized the potential for improved governance and service delivery under UPC leadership, leveraging his extensive experience and understanding of Ugandan politics. He underscored UPC’s recent successes in the Dokolo Woman MP by-elections as evidence of the party’s strengthened position.
Responding to queries about UPC’s historical stronghold in the Kigezi sub-region, Akena acknowledged past challenges but affirmed the party’s commitment to revitalizing its presence. He signaled a proactive approach to reconnecting with supporters and rebuilding grassroots mobilization efforts.
While Akena’s aspirations for the presidency raised questions about UPC’s political alliances, particularly its relationship with the ruling NRM and President Museveni, he remained steadfast in his vision for the party’s resurgence.
Political analysts, including Prof Sabiiti Makara, underscored the formidable task ahead for Akena in reclaiming UPC’s support base in the Kigezi sub-region. However, Akena’s nationwide consultative meetings signal a renewed vigor within the party as it gears up for the challenges and opportunities of the 2026 election cycle.
From Kigezi, Akena’s journey continues to Kitgum District, marking another pivotal step in UPC’s nationwide engagement strategy.
