Two teenagers drowned on Christmas Day in a tragic accident while swimming in Lake Victoria at Jinja City’s Masese Landing Site.
The fatalities, who were three people going for an evening swim when they arrived at 5:30 p.m., met a horrible end as they entered deep waters.
Witnesses stated that throughout the joyous festivities, nobody noticed the children’s presence.
As one of the three tried to save a friend who had vanished into the deep end, a somber turn of events occurred.
Francis Magara, a local resident, expressed, The three children came on a motorcycle and entered the waters, swimming. Because everyone was busy celebrating Christmas, we didn’t notice that they went to the deep waters of the lake.”
On Christmas evening, local divers and the marine police moved quickly to begin rescue operations, and they were able to recover one body.
The sadness surrounding the Masese Landing Site was heightened by the recovery of the second body today.
In a heartbreaking show of grief, angry residents refused to let the police take one of the remains to the mortuary, preferring to give it to the grieving parents themselves.
