Ssegirinya’s Friend Muhammad Luwemba Has Been Nominated

Muhammad Luwemba, formerly known as Alex Lusswa Luwemba, has officially changed his name in honor of the late Kawempe North MP, Muhammad Ssegirinya, whose legacy he aims to continue. Luwemba, a longtime aide to the late MP, has been nominated to contest for the parliamentary seat left vacant following Ssegirinya’s passing.

Although his academic documents still bear his former name, his national identification card reflects the change, supported by a deed poll submitted to the National Unity Platform (NUP) Electoral Committee. Ssegirinya’s family has endorsed Luwemba as his political successor, citing his close relationship with the late MP and his deep understanding of Kawempe North’s needs.

“My son’s legacy must continue, and we believe Luwemba will advocate for the people and uphold his work,” said Ssegirinya’s mother, Ms. Justine Ssanyu Nakajumba, in a statement last month.

The NUP has confirmed eight contenders for its party flag, including lawyer Elias Nalukola Luyimbazi. However, several aspirants faced challenges, such as Kulya Saulo Zziwa, whose nomination was rejected over document certification issues, and Salim Serunkuma, who initially failed to present a formal letter of interest.

The NUP Election Management Committee is scheduled to announce the official party flag bearer on February 5. The election to replace Ssegirinya, who passed away on January 9, 2025, at Lubaga Hospital due to brain failure and multiple organ collapse, is set for March 13.
