Renowned Ugandan singer, songwriter, and political activist Nubian Li (real name Buken Ali) has officially declared his intention to contest for the Nakawa Mayorship in the upcoming 2026 general elections.
Nubian Li, a longtime close ally of musician-turned-politician Robert Kyagulanyi, alias Bobi Wine, made the announcement over the weekend while addressing mourners at a burial ceremony. In his speech, he called upon the public to rally behind his political aspirations, emphasizing his commitment to serving the people of Nakawa.
His decision to enter the political arena is seen as a continuation of the trend where entertainers and public figures transition into leadership roles, inspired by Bobi Wine’s rise in Ugandan politics. As a key member of the National Unity Platform (NUP), Nubian Li has been an outspoken advocate for change, democracy, and better governance, often using his music and activism to highlight issues affecting ordinary Ugandans.
Given his strong grassroots support and influence, his entry into the Nakawa Mayoral race is expected to generate significant political interest. Analysts predict that his candidacy could reshape the dynamics of the race, especially as more public figures and artists express interest in elective politics ahead of 2026.
As the election season gains momentum, Nubian Li’s campaign will be closely monitored to see how he navigates the shift from entertainment to governance, and whether he can translate his popularity into electoral success.
