Police Tips Parents, Students on Road Safety As School Resumes

The directorate of traffic police has tipped students, parents, motorists, and the general public about road safety precautions

Micheal Kananura, the traffic police spokesperson asked road users to exercise discipline while on the road to enable students and other pedestrians to cross and children below 12 must be accompanied by elders while on motorcycles.

This call comes at a time when schools are set to open for the first term of the 2024 academic year.

Addressing journalists at the police headquarters in Naguru, Micheal Kananura directorate of traffic police spokesperson cautioned Pedestrians and motorists to be alert and be mindful of pupils/students crossing the roads at different points such as zebra crossings.

Boda boda riders are required to carry one child fully dressed in a crash helmet and the company of another older person for support.

Students have been advised to take buses and boda boda from authorized stages and vehicles to avoid fraudsters who typically prey on unsuspecting people during this season.

Kananura also cautions school management to ensure that shuttles and school vans are in an appropriate mechanical condition before being used to ferry children.

According to police from 21st to 27th January 2024, a total of 290 road crashes were registered, 50 lives were lost in these crashes, and 257 sustained injuries.

Among the lives lost, 19 pedestrians, 14 motorcyclists, and 5 passengers were on motorcycles
