Confirmed reports indicate that NBS TV, a prominent media house based in Naguru, has parted ways with one of its well-known presenters, Zambali Bulasio Mukasa. The development follows Zambali’s declaration of his political ambitions and association with the National Unity Platform (NUP), led by Hon. Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, also known as Bobi Wine.
The confirmation of his departure was made by the NBS Corporate Affairs Manager through a series of tweets. He clarified that Next Media, the parent company of NBS TV, maintains a strict policy regarding staff involvement in active politics.
“When any staff member chooses to run for political office, the company policy is clear: Next Media lets them be and supports them in that regard. Zambaali, like Victoria, have made their political bids clear and are BOTH no longer on air,” the statement read.
Zambali recently announced his intention to contest for the parliamentary seat in Nansana Municipality under the NUP banner. He has also been actively involved in NUP campaign activities, including supporting Counsel Elias Nalukoola Luyimbazi during the Kawempe North by-election. While addressing a crowd at one of the campaign events, Zambali emphasized that neutrality in times of oppression is equivalent to siding with the oppressor, affirming his stance in support of his political beliefs.
The decision to take Zambali off the air has sparked public debate, with concerns raised over perceived double standards, especially as another colleague, Victoria Bagaya, has also announced her political aspirations. However, Next Media has reiterated its stance on political involvement, emphasizing its commitment to non-partisanship.
“For Next Media as an independent media house, non-partisanship is essential for us to effectively Inform to Transform. These same policies have led to various levels of reprimands for those engaging in partisan politics. It is, therefore, false to claim that Victoria is still actively working at Next Media. The same shall apply to anyone of us that chooses that path – no one will be stopped, but support comes with stepping away from active roles within the Group,” the statement further explained.
Sources indicate that Zambali has faced suspension from his supervisors at NBS TV and was notably absent from his usual hosting duties on the ‘Barometer Show’ last night, with fellow presenter Adam Kungu stepping in.
The situation has generated significant discussion within media circles and the public, raising questions about press freedom, neutrality, and the intersection of journalism and politics. While Next Media maintains its position on political involvement, the debate over the fairness and consistency of these policies continues to unfold.
