President Yoweri Museveni arrived in Zanzibar at the invitation of Her Excellency Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, the Tanzanian President.
On arrival, the president was received at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport in Zanzibar by Dr. Khalid Salum Mohammed, the Tanzanian Minister of Construction and Communications.
Also present at the airport to welcome President Museveni was Uganda’s High Commissioner to Tanzania, Rtd. Col. Fred Mwesigye, and his deputy, Maj. Gen. Geoffrey Muheesi, along with the Defense attaché at the Uganda High Commission in Tanzania, Brigadier Ronald Bigirwa.
In his speech, Museveni congratulated the people of Zanzibar, the entire Republic, and the People of Tanzania on this special historic occasion.
He said the efforts of the revolutionaries, led by His Excellency Abeid Amani Karume, ensured that Zanzibar had an excellent opportunity to practice pure African principles of governance that believed in African unity rather than divide and rule.
“Working with Mwalimu Nyerere, Zanzibar showed the rest of Africa that if two countries can agree to come together as one, it is possible for the rest of Africa. I strongly believe in unity as a driver for broader markets, a means to rapid development, and an answer to external pressures.” Museveni said.
Several dignitaries, including East African leaders, were also invited to grace the colorful ceremony
