Ten NUP Supporters Arrested Over Attack on Police Convoy in Lira

Ten supporters of the National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu have been arrested for allegedly attacking police officers trailing his convoy in Lira District on Tuesday.

According to police, the incident occurred at Obot A Village, near Obot Primary School, while Kyagulanyi’s convoy was en route to Alebtong District for a campaign rally. The suspects reportedly intercepted a police vehicle, punctured its tyres, and stole property belonging to the officers on board.

Adressing the press on Wednesday, police spokesperson ACP Rusoke Kituuma said the group vandalized the police car, claiming it was carrying a signal jammer used to interfere with their online broadcasts.
“Those claims are false. The attackers fabricated the accusation to create chaos and justify their criminal actions,” Rusoke said.

He identified the arrested suspects as Ssembusi Precious Paul, Bukenya Ismail, Lokoro Liberty, Nakabuye Mastura, Waiswa Raston, Nasozi Hope, Saliman Kagwa, Kamulegeya Regan, Katamba Stephen, and Lubega Alison. They are currently detained at Lira Central Police Station, facing charges of malicious damage and robbery.

Police also impounded a green Toyota Hiace drone, registration UA 933AU, allegedly used by the suspects during the confrontation. The vehicle and several exhibits are being examined as investigations continue.

Rusoke said the arrests are part of a broader operation targeting individuals who have been “provoking the police with increasing levels of aggression.”

“We are not targeting peaceful supporters or candidates,” he noted. “We are holding accountable those who have turned belligerence and violence into a campaign tactic.”

He added that the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has been notified, and the suspects will be produced in court once investigations are complete.

Meanwhile, the NUP leadership has not yet issued an official response to the arrests. The incident adds to a growing list of clashes between Kyagulanyi’s campaign team and security forces during his trail across the Lango sub-region.

Police have reiterated their commitment to ensuring security during campaigns but warned that acts of hooliganism and obstruction of law enforcement will not be tolerated.
