War on Malaria in Busoga, Indoor Residual Spraying Kicks off

Former Vice President Specioza Wandera Kazibwe has launched the Busoga Malaria Eradication Project, a bold initiative aimed at combating malaria in the Busoga sub-region. This region has long struggled with high malaria-related deaths and hospitalizations, accounting for 33% of outpatient visits, 22% of hospitalizations, and 11% of malaria-related deaths in Uganda

The project, in partnership with the Busoga Health Forum, focuses on mass screening, treatment, and indoor residual spraying to kill mosquitoes and reduce transmission risks. Residents like Yolamu Kumunu, a father of nine, have struggled with the financial burden of malaria treatment, spending over Shs60,000 monthly. Kumunu’s case is not isolated, as many families in Busoga face similar challenges due to the prevalence of mosquitoes in swampy areas and overgrown bushes.

Health workers attribute the persistent malaria crisis to poor environmental management. Dr. Karim Muluya, assistant district health officer for Iganga, notes that funds spent on malaria treatment could be better utilized for household development projects to boost incomes.

Health expert Allan Katamba is optimistic that the project will reduce malaria cases and financial strain on families. Kazibwe remains hopeful that with the right interventions, malaria can be eradicated in Busoga.
