American celebrity judge and social media sensation Frank Caprio has died at the age of 88, his family has confirmed.
Caprio, best known for his long-running television show Caught in Providence, passed away following a battle with pancreatic cancer. The news of his death was shared on his official Instagram account, where he was fondly remembered for his “warmth, humor, and unwavering belief in the goodness of people.”

The retired judge rose to international fame for his compassionate and often light-hearted approach to justice, which earned him millions of fans online. Clips of his courtroom sessions, where he combined fairness with empathy, went viral across platforms, turning him into one of the most beloved judges in America and beyond.
Born in Providence, Rhode Island, in 1936, Caprio served as chief judge of the Providence Municipal Court for decades. Beyond his judicial duties, he was admired as a community leader, philanthropist, and educator, devoting much of his life to public service.
In December 2022, Caprio revealed that he had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, a condition he described as “the most challenging chapter of my life.” Despite the illness, he remained active in sharing messages of hope, gratitude, and resilience with his global following.
Tributes have since poured in from across the United States and around the world. Many praised Caprio for redefining the image of justice by emphasizing compassion and humanity in the courtroom.
“He reminded us that justice can be firm but kind, and that every individual deserves to be treated with dignity,” one tribute read.
Caprio is survived by his wife, Joyce, their five children, and several grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced in the coming days.
