UPDF Trains 124 Engineers in Land Law to Curb Rising Disputes

The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has intensified efforts to strengthen the management of public land with the graduation of 124 soldiers from a specialised land law and estate management course at the Uganda Military Engineers College in Lugazi.

The course, conducted under the Engineers Brigade, aimed at equipping officers with deeper legal knowledge to tackle persistent land-related disputes and improve the handling of military property across the country.

Presiding over the ceremony, College Commandant Col Dr Eng Charles Muhigirwa said engineers shoulder a large share of the UPDF’s land and construction responsibilities, making legal literacy essential.

He noted that gaps in understanding land laws and policies have in the past contributed to conflicts, project delays, financial losses and, in some cases, the displacement of communities.

“Professional conduct in land and estate management is crucial. The knowledge you have acquired should help prevent avoidable disputes and improve our service delivery,” Col Muhigirwa told the graduates.

The Commandant of the Legal Training Centre, Col Susan Mwanga, said the programme was designed to provide soldiers with a practical appreciation of land acquisition processes, lawful ownership and responsible use of public land.

She said the UPDF expects fewer conflicts and smoother project implementation as more personnel gain legal training related to land administration.

The ceremony was attended by commanders, staff officers, instructors and other leaders from the Lugazi Cantonment.
