The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has begun testing advanced agricultural technology developed by a Japanese expert as part of efforts to strengthen food production for its personnel.
Dr Jo Min Kim, a professor from the University of Tokyo, on Thursday conducted a field demonstration of Skepper Technology at the Kabamba Army Farm in Mubende District. The innovation is designed to protect crops from drought and extreme heat challenges that continue to undermine farming across the country.

Major General Sam Kiwanuka, the Chief Coordinator of the UPDF Department of Production, said the visit marked a major step toward improving the force’s ability to feed its troops. He noted that although agriculture is central to soldiers’ welfare, it remains vulnerable to shifting weather patterns.
“Despite these setbacks, the department has helped stabilise the price of maize and other food items nationwide, which has ensured consistent food security within the force,” Gen Kiwanuka said.
During the demonstration, Dr Kim explained that Skepper Technology can help plants withstand harsh conditions while reducing water usage and labour costs.
“It can save almost any type of plant during drought. With time, it has the potential to support UPDF operations by producing high volumes of food,” he said.
Maj JB Kawuki, Head of Production, said the army urgently needs to embrace modern innovations that enhance resilience and yields.
“We expect Dr Kim’s technology to improve our output and help us cope with drought conditions. This demonstration at Kabamba will help us compare Skepper technology with our usual farming practices,” he said.
The session was attended by staff officers from the Department of Production, marking the beginning of what the UPDF hopes will become a broader technological shift in military food production.
