A UPDF soldier and a civilian have been taken into custody by Kawempe police for robbing a mobile money agency at gunpoint.
At approximately 11 a.m. on Monday, Shs 600.000 was stolen from Polymath Investments, an Airtel branch in Maganjo, by Robert Kyaligonza, the rogue soldier currently under detention, and Elia Sekyanzi, his accomplice.
The two were detained by police officers from Katale police station while returning from a robbery mission in Maganjo A Zone, Maganjo Parish, Nabweru Sub-County, Wakiso District, according to Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesperson Luke Owoyesigire.
According to Owoyesigire, despite the suspects’ efforts to elude capture, the officers caught them carrying a bag thought to contain stolen money and took them into custody.
“During the arrest, Kyaligonza Robert was found in possession of a star pistol with 8 rounds of ammunition. The suspects later confessed to robbing a mobile money agent in Maganjo, administered by Muwonge Eddy,” he said
According to Owoyesigire, the two broke into Polymath Investments and forced the employees, Christine Nanteza and Eddy Muwonge, to give up all of the cash on the property. As a result, six hundred thousand shillings were pilfered.
According to reports, Robert Kyaligonza was detained by the UPDF due to his past involvement in a theft case.
According to the police, more research will be done to determine whether the firearm used in this heist was used in any other known gun-related crimes.
Police have recommended mobile money agents to reduce their working hours, particularly throughout the night, to prevent such thefts against them.
The victims of the robbery case have been identified by the Kawempe team, and their statements have been obtained to support the current investigations.
