A group of thirteen officers from the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), currently deployed under the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), have successfully concluded a week-long Human Security Planning course aimed at strengthening their capacity in stabilisation operations.

The training, conducted in Mogadishu, was facilitated by the United Kingdom Mission Support Team (UKMST) and focused on integrating human security principles into military planning and execution.

During the closing ceremony, Col Richard Grover, Commander of UKMST in Somalia, applauded the officers for their commitment and active participation throughout the intensive training. He emphasized the significance of planning in mission success. “If you don’t get it right in planning at the start, you will have a hard time at the battlefront,” Col Grover noted, urging the officers to apply the knowledge gained and pass it on to junior commanders and frontline troops.

Lt Col Vincent Mutebi Masembe, representing the Deputy Contingent Commander of Sector One, congratulated the graduates on their resilience, particularly given the condensed training schedule. “Proper planning limits battlefield casualties and boosts operational success,” he said. “Training builds confidence, experience, and morale—essential pillars of a strong military force.”

The closing event was also graced by Maj Bernard Muhatane, Sector One Training Officer; Capt Alex Bidie, Head of Training at UKMST; and several senior and junior non-commissioned officers from Sector One.

This training is part of ongoing efforts to ensure that UPDF officers not only contribute to regional stability but also uphold principles that prioritize the safety, rights, and well-being of local populations.
