The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has hosted a delegation of 39 senior officers from the Armed Forces Command and Staff College (AFCSC), Nigeria, who are in the country as part of a continental study tour examining Africa’s socio-economic, political, cultural, and security landscape.
Representing the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Chief of Joint Staff, Lt Gen Jack Bakasumba, emphasized the need for African armies to deepen collaboration in addressing shared security challenges. He praised the strong and longstanding military partnership between Uganda and Nigeria, noting that both countries routinely exchange and train officers at various levels.

Brig Gen Nnemeka Ogili, Director of the Department of Land Warfare at the Nigerian Command and Staff College, led the delegation and commended Uganda for its “courageous and pioneering” role in regional peacekeeping operations.
He pointed to the UPDF’s historic deployment to Somalia in 2007 under the African Union Mission, saying Uganda demonstrated leadership when many countries only made commitments but did not deploy.
“No African country at that point was willing to put a foot on the ground in Somalia. A lot of countries had made pledges, but nobody deployed. Uganda did,” he said. “And ever since, Uganda has remained in Somalia. We know that AUSSOM’s backbone is Uganda.”
Brig Gen Ogili also highlighted prominent UPDF officers who trained in Nigeria, including Maj Gen (Rtd) George Igumba, noting that the partnership spans Cadet training, Staff College, and National Defence College levels.
Senior UPDF officers present at the engagement included the Deputy Chief of Defence Intelligence and Security, Brig Gen Abdul Rugumayo; Joint Staff–Logistics, Brig Gen Godfrey Karugaba; Joint Staff–Finance, Brig Gen Robert Mugabe; and Nigeria’s Deputy Defence Attaché to Uganda, DM Bozegha, among others.
The Nigerian delegation will continue engagements as part of their broader assessment of African military and governance systems.
