The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has announced the immediate suspension of all military and defense operations with the Federal Republic of Germany, citing alleged subversive activities linked to Germany’s Ambassador to Uganda, H.E. Mathias Schauer.

In a press statement issued on Sunday by UPDF’s Acting Director of Defence Public Information, Colonel Chris Magezi, the army said the decision was informed by “credible intelligence reports” indicating that Ambassador Schauer is “actively engaged in subversive activities” against the Ugandan government.
“This suspension will remain in force until the full resolution of the matter concerning the ambassador’s involvement with hostile pseudo-pseudo-political-military operating in the country,” the statement read in part.
While the UPDF did not provide specific details regarding the nature of the alleged activities or the groups involved, the statement suggested that the conduct of the ambassador has crossed a line that compromises Uganda’s national security interests.
The UPDF and Germany have historically cooperated in military training, peacekeeping support, and logistics assistance. The abrupt suspension marks a notable shift in diplomatic and defenced defenses between the two countries.
This development comes amid broader concerns about foreign influence and alleged interference in Uganda’s internal affairs. Neither the German Embassy in Kampala nor Ambassador Schauer had issued a public response by press time.

Observers say the suspension could complicate diplomatic ties and ongoing security cooperation programs between the two nations. Analysts also note that such accusations, if not substantiated with concrete evidence, could have implications for Uganda’s broader international partnerships.
The UPDF has called for a resolution to the matter and remains firm in its position until further notice.
