The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), operating under the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), successfully repelled a coordinated attack by Al-Shabaab militants on Friday morning, killing 19 insurgents and recovering a cache of weapons.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs, the assault occurred at approximately 6:30 a.m. at Forward Operating Bases (FOBs) located in Sabiid-Anole, southwest of Mogadishu. The bases, recently liberated from Al-Shabaab in June, are jointly manned by UPDF and Somali National Armed Forces (SNAF) troops.

“The joint forces successfully repelled the attack, forcing the terrorists to flee. Nineteen Al-Shabaab militants were killed in action, while 13 others escaped with serious injuries,” the statement read.
During the operation, security forces seized significant weaponry, including an 82mm mortar barrel, six PKM machine guns, and 13 submachine guns (SMGs).
Military officials emphasized that the FOBs remain firmly under the control of AUSSOM and SNAF troops, adding that follow-up operations are underway to track down fleeing militants and their collaborators.
“The joint forces have intensified operations in the Lower Shabelle region to dismantle Al-Shabaab’s presence and liberate all areas still under their control,” said Maj. Gen. Felix Kulayigye, UPDF Spokesperson and Director of Defence Public Information.
AUSSOM reassured residents of Sabiid-Anole and nearby communities of continued safety and stability as efforts to neutralize terrorist threats continue.
