The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has constructed a bridge linking Nyamizi Cell in Kihanda Sub-county and Kakoni LC1 in Nyarugunda Parish, Kanungu District, in a bid to improve trade and access to public services.
Built by the UPDF Engineers Brigade at a cost of 50 million shillings, the bridge is part of ongoing efforts to support communities during the 45th Tarehe Sita celebrations.
Residents had faced persistent challenges transporting produce such as coffee, bananas, and cattle to markets, as well as accessing health and education services. According to Maj Albert Mukama, head of the UPDF Engineers team in Kigezi, the bridge was constructed using locally sourced timber and stones, employing a smart, cost-effective engineering approach.

Maj Mukama said the bridge was built to military engineering standards, ensuring it can safely support heavy vehicles. He noted that similar bridges built by the UPDF in parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo have supported the movement of trucks and tankers.
“The bridge was necessary due to the difficulties residents faced crossing the hilly terrain and accessing services. If well maintained, it will last at least 20 years,” Maj Mukama said.
Area chairperson Kintu Henry praised the UPDF for the project, noting that residents, including schoolchildren, had previously risked their lives crossing the stream on makeshift bridges during heavy rains.
Brig Gen Micheal Kibuye, UPDF Director of Civil Military Cooperation, thanked the Engineers for completing the project in less than a month, saying it is one of several civil-military initiatives undertaken in Kigezi as part of the 45th Tarehe Sita celebrations.
The bridge is set to be officially handed over to the community on January 6, 2026.
