UPC’s Jimmy Akena Vows to Sacrifice Everything for Political Change in Uganda

Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) party leader, Mr. Jimmy Akena Obote, has declared his unwavering commitment to bringing political change in Uganda, vowing to do whatever it takes to displace President Museveni, who has led the country for nearly four decades.

“There must come a point when we say enough is enough. For me, I’ve crossed that point. I have crossed the point where I’ve said I’ve had enough. I am here today to make it very clear that I am making a difference in this country of ours and whatever threat they do to me, whether it is tear gas or whether they want to put me with Kizza [Besigye] in jail, I am not going to turn back,” Akena said while addressing a rally at Kalaki Primary School in Kalaki District on Sunday, March 2, 2025.

Akena, the son of former President Milton Obote, emphasized that he is determined to push for change ahead of the 2026 general elections, even if it means risking his own life.

“My only prayer to God is to see a day where Uganda succeeds before I die. I am not afraid to go and meet my father. Both fathers: father in heaven (God) and my father (Obote). I don’t have to fear going,” he declared.

His father, Milton Obote, who ruled Uganda twice, passed away on October 10, 2005. Akena noted that throughout his leadership, Obote worked tirelessly for the well-being of Ugandans, and he is determined to carry on that legacy.

“So, before I go, I must work for my people such that when I go, I will be sure I have done everything I can for my people, but I need your support,” Akena urged.

Akena passionately declared that he only has two options in his mission for Uganda’s transformation:

“Uganda must succeed! That is option one. Uganda will succeed! That is option two.”

“I am happy when Uganda succeeds, I am happy when the people of Uganda succeed and therefore, I will do everything in my power to make this work and it has to work. I have those who are standing with me. I have those who are determined to make that difference, and Uganda will work for Uganda,” he emphasized.

Akena reiterated his ambition to enter State House through the forthcoming elections, stressing that his ultimate goal is to transform Uganda. He urged Ugandans to prepare to stand for truth as the country approaches the next election cycle.

“Let us work for the next generation, let us make sure that the children who are born today will have a better future, let them have the education which is worthwhile so that they can succeed anywhere they go,” he stated.

Later in the day, while addressing another rally in Otuboi Town, Akena called on voters to support his vision for change.

“That change has to come. The change which will benefit the citizens of Uganda. As far as I am concerned, we have suffered enough. I pray to God that this suffering has ended, but I need all of us to move together for a better future,” he told the gathering.
