The conference comes in the wake of a recent High Court ruling delivered on July 18, 2025, which barred Akena from contesting for the party presidency again, effectively cutting short his ambitions for another term.

Addressing the media on Saturday at party headquarters on Uganda House, Akena revealed that he has two weeks left in his current term, after which leadership will be handed over to the party’s delegates for a decision on the next course of action.

“The National Delegates Conference will now decide what the party will do next,” Akena stated, adding that this meeting will deliberate on the implications of the ruling and chart a way forward.

The UPC leader, who is also the son of the late President Milton Obote, accused the NRM regime of orchestrating the legal challenges facing the party.

Despite the setback, Akena reaffirmed his ambition to contest for Uganda’s presidency in the 2026 General Elections, saying:

“Even if I am stripped of the party presidency, I will contest to change the leadership trajectory of this country.”

The agenda of the upcoming conference will include deliberation on the court ruling, the party’s future leadership, and strategies ahead of the 2026 elections.
