Uganda Vows To Eradicate Corruption, But Challenges Persist

 

The government has reiterated its unwavering commitment to eradicating corruption and promoting transparency through strengthening the capacity of the anti-corruption agencies
 The theme of this year’s celebration, “Promoting Effective Participation of the Youth in the War Against Corruption,” highlights the importance of involving the youth in the fight against corruption.
“The government is very committed to ending corruption in Uganda. As you are all aware, our unwavering commitment to combat corruption dates back to the liberation struggle during the Bush War, where we articulated the need for accountability and integrity under the Ten-Point Programme of the National Resistance Movement (NRM).” PM Nabanjja said
She adds that, “Point Number 7 of the programme emphasized the elimination of corruption and the misuse of power, recognizing these as critical barriers to national development and good governance.
It should be noted that the country has made remarkable strides in strengthening the legal and institutional anti-corruption framework, and key international and regional conventions have been ratified, demonstrating Uganda’s firm commitment to combating corruption at all levels.”
Prime Minister Robina Nabanjja who represented President Museveni at this year’s commemorations,  emphasized that The country made significant strides in strengthening its legal and institutional anti-corruption framework, ratifying key international and regional conventions.
She further highlights the government’s commitment to strengthening the capacity of Anti-Corruption Agencies to effectively handle the fight against corruption.
The prime minister also urged Anti-Corruption Agencies to identify high-risk areas and develop strategies to prevent corruption, including digitizing service delivery, strengthening internal and external audits, and monitoring government projects.
“I am glad that the Anti-Corruption Agencies are working collaboratively with other State and Non-State Actors and have demonstrated a firm commitment to implementing the vision of Zero Tolerance to corruption and enforcing Anti-Corruption laws.”
Nabanjja also Emphasized the critical role of young people in combating corruption, fostering transparency, and building a future of integrity.
Benson Turyame the executive director of the Public Procurement and Disposal of Public Assets Authority on behalf of other anti-corruption agencies tasked the youth to take the lead in the fight.
Balam Barugahare, the state minister for youth affairs highlighted the role youth play in combating corruption however noted that their potential can only be realized through prioritizing their participation.
