The Government of Uganda has joined the global community in mourning the death of Pope Francis, who passed away at the age of 88. Minister for ICT and National Guidance, Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, hailed the late pontiff as not only a spiritual leader but also a global voice for humanity.

“He was not just a spiritual leader; he was a public voice and an advisor on key global and humanitarian issues,” Dr. Baryomunsi stated.
Dr. Baryomunsi recalled Pope Francis’s memorable 2015 visit to Uganda, during which he commemorated the 50th anniversary of the canonization of the Uganda Martyrs. He described the visit as a landmark event that left a lasting imprint on the nation’s religious and diplomatic ties.
“He will always be remembered for his visit to Uganda,” Baryomunsi said. “It was a moment that brought people together and rekindled spiritual devotion. Uganda held a special place in his heart.”

Pope Francis, originally named Jorge Mario Bergoglio and born in Argentina, became the 267th pope of the Roman Catholic Church when he was elected on March 13, 2013. His leadership was defined by modesty and a strong commitment to defending the rights and dignity of the vulnerable and marginalized.
Dr. Baryomunsi also confirmed that Uganda will send official representation to the Pope’s funeral through its embassy in Rome.
