The Government of Uganda has launched an emergency evacuation operation to rescue its citizens stranded in the Islamic Republic of Iran and the State of Israel, following the outbreak of armed conflict between the two nations on June 13.
In a press statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Permanent Secretary Vincent Bagire Waiswa confirmed that the evacuation plan is being executed in collaboration with Uganda’s diplomatic missions and other relevant international partners.

“Using our established evacuation protocols, we have already registered Ugandan students in Iran and received distress reports regarding citizens in Israel through relatives and concerned community members,” the statement read.
So far, the Ministry has confirmed that 48 Ugandan nationals are currently being evacuated safely from Tehran. Engagements have also been initiated with the authorities in Iran to facilitate additional safe passage from conflict zones.
The Ministry further noted that it is working with governments of neighboring countries including Türkiye, Azerbaijan, and Jordan to secure emergency transit visas for Ugandans being evacuated. Communications have also been established with Uganda’s embassies in Türkiye, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar to provide necessary consular support during the evacuation process.

Uganda’s diplomatic missions in the region have been instructed to receive evacuees and coordinate their safe return home.
However, the Ministry acknowledged logistical difficulties due to airspace closures in the region. “Iran and Israel have both closed their airspace until further notice. This has caused delays and challenges in securing appropriate transport,” the statement noted.
Despite these constraints, the Ministry assured the public that it is “doing everything within its means” to ensure the safety and secure relocation of Ugandan nationals from the affected areas.
