In a significant shift in U.S. immigration policy, President Donald Trump has signed an executive order launching “Project Homecoming,” a program designed to encourage undocumented immigrants to voluntarily leave the United States. The initiative offers government-funded flights and a $1,000 “exit bonus” to individuals who choose to self-deport.
Central to this program is the introduction of the “CBP Home” mobile application, developed by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The app allows undocumented migrants to declare their intent to depart, book flights to any country (excluding the U.S.), and access travel assistance services. DHS Secretary Kristi Noem emphasized that those who opt for self-deportation may have the opportunity to return legally in the future, whereas those who do not comply will face stringent penalties.

President Trump stated that the program aims to make the departure process as straightforward as possible for undocumented individuals, highlighting the potential cost savings for American taxpayers. He warned that those who choose to remain illegally will face severe consequences, including fines, imprisonment, and deportation.
The administration has also announced plans to deputize additional law enforcement personnel and launch an aggressive deportation effort within 60 days. A nationwide campaign will be initiated to raise awareness about the program and the consequences of non-compliance.
Critics of the program argue that it may lead to increased fear and uncertainty among immigrant communities. Advocacy groups have urged individuals to seek legal counsel before making decisions regarding self-deportation.
