The Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, in partnership with the Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) North Region, has conducted a comprehensive road safety campaign at Bwaise Bus Terminal, targeting public transport operators and community stakeholders in a bid to curb the rising number of traffic crashes in the region.

The campaign was led by Acting Deputy Director of Traffic, ACP Musinga Norman, and Directorate Liaison Officer, SP Michael Kananura, and comes in response to growing road safety concerns, particularly in KMP North, which last year recorded 376 fatalities, making it the third most affected region after Rwizi and Albertine, according to the Uganda Police Annual Crime Report.
The initiative kicked off with internal meetings involving traffic officers from across the region, followed by public outreach engagements involving taxi drivers, boda boda riders, market vendors, LC officials, passengers, and pedestrians.
“This campaign is about building partnerships and promoting a culture of safety. We want everyone to understand that road safety is a shared responsibility,” said SP Kananura.
The discussions centred around practical interventions aimed at reducing crashes, improving compliance with traffic laws, and encouraging safer behavior among road users. Participants were reminded of the dangers of reckless driving, speeding, overloading, and non-use of protective gear such as helmets.
According to ACP Musinga, such campaigns are part of a broader national strategy to enhance road safety awareness and reduce preventable deaths and injuries caused by traffic crashes.
Stakeholders welcomed the initiative and pledged to play a more active role in promoting safety within their communities.
The Directorate pledged to continue rolling out similar campaigns in other high-risk areas as part of its countrywide strategy to make Uganda’s roads safer for all users.
