Kampala Metropolitan Police have launched investigations into a suspected case of gross negligence following a massive explosion inside a sauna at UZIGA Country Resort in Upper UZIGA Zone, Makindye Division, on Sunday evening.
The blast, which occurred at around 8:30pm on August 24, left three women with severe injuries and caused extensive structural damage to the facility.

According to ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the Deputy Public Relations Officer for Kampala Metropolitan Police, the victims have been identified as Hadjat Mastula, 69, the LC1 Vice Chairperson of Katwe-Katwe Cell, who sustained extensive burns to her back, chest, and lower body; Zahra Nakawesi, 39, who suffered burns and broken legs; and Mamaram Aisha, who sustained multiple severe burns across her body.
The victims were initially rushed to Kiruddu Hospital for emergency care. Two of them were later referred to Kawempe and Mulago hospitals for specialised treatment, police confirmed.
A police team dispatched to the scene found part of the sauna’s structure had collapsed, with walls left cracked, debris scattered, broken glass, and blood stains visible. Preliminary findings suggest the explosion was “very big,” though its exact cause has yet to be determined.
Owoyesigyire said no arrests have been made so far, and the premises remain cordoned off as investigations continue.
“This is not the first time such incidents have occurred in saunas. We have invited technical experts, including the National Building Review Board, to examine the construction, temperature regulation, and equipment inside the sauna to establish whether safety standards were followed,” he said.
Police say those found culpable of negligence will be prosecuted.
