By Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Joel Ssenyonyi, has accused the government of deliberately targeting National Unity Platform (NUP) supporters with arrests in what he described as a calculated attempt to derail the party’s political momentum.
Addressing journalists outside court, Ssenyonyi said the arrests were designed to keep opposition leaders and supporters entangled in legal battles instead of focusing on what he called the struggle to “liberate the country.”
“The state keeps arresting our people so that we are always in court instead of doing other things,” Ssenyonyi said. “This is not prosecution, it is persecution. But we are not tired of fighting for the freedom of our people.”

He accused state attorney Sharon Sarah Nambuya of acting in bad faith, claiming she was deliberately frustrating proceedings. “She is fumbling with simple matters such as verifying a national ID that is issued by the government itself. Instead, she orders police to keep arresting our people,” Ssenyonyi charged.
The LOP also cited the recent arrest of NUP Deputy Spokesperson Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro, who was charged with unlawful drilling and conspiracy to commit a felony. Ssenyonyi dismissed the charges as baseless, describing them as part of a “fishing expedition” meant to silence opposition voices.
“They arrested Alex, then began fumbling around for what to charge him with. On the day they claim he was engaged in unlawful activities, he wasn’t even at the scene. This persecution will not weaken us,” he insisted.
Ssenyonyi vowed that despite the legal hurdles, NUP would continue with its campaign activities while standing by its detained members. “If they think they’ll derail us because we are in to campaigns, they are mistaken. We’ll campaign and fight for the freedom of our colleagues at the same time,” he said.
The remarks come as several NUP supporters remain in detention, with the next court appearance for Mufumbiro and others scheduled later this month.
