Bukoto Central MP Richard Ssebamala has launched a sharp attack on Democratic Party (DP) president Norbert Mao, accusing him of abandoning the opposition and failing to speak out against the continued detention of Dr Kizza Besigye.
Ssebamala, who is challenging Mao for the party’s top seat, questioned the credibility of the cooperation agreement Mao signed with President Museveni, saying it was supposed to promote “truth and justice” but has instead exposed Mao’s political betrayal.

Speaking to the press at parliament, Ssebamala took issue with Mao’s apparent inaction as Besigye remains in detention despite reportedly meeting all bail conditions.
“What drama has Mao been to?” Ssebamala asked. “He joined the cooperation agreement, swore an oath to advise the president on truth and justice, yet he has failed to even speak up for a fellow opposition leader.”
He added, “Besigye is in jail and he [Mao] can’t even say a word. Is that why he was made Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs? What has he done? He’s supposed to advise the president, but he has kept quiet.”
Besigye, a former presidential candidate and founding member of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), was recently arrested and detained in connection with treason charges

Ssebamala’s criticism reflects growing frustration within the opposition over what some perceive as Mao’s alignment with the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) and his diminished role in pushing for democratic reforms.
“Let him go and take care of that mess,” Ssebamala added. “He was entrusted with a role to represent justice, but is he really helping this country or the opposition?”
The remarks come amid rising political tension ahead of the 2026 elections, with opposition figures calling for greater unity and action in the face of mounting repression.
