Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among has joined global leaders in mourning the passing of Pope Francis, describing him as a “humble servant of God” and a “powerful advocate for social justice.”
In a heartfelt post shared on her official X (formerly Twitter) account, Among reflected on her encounters with the late pontiff, noting the deep impact of their private audiences.

“It is with deep sorrow and a profound sense of loss that I join millions around the world in mourning the Holy Father,” she wrote, sharing photos from her previous visits to the Vatican where she met the Pope.
In her post, Among praised Pope Francis for his humility, compassion, and dedication to the service of humanity, particularly his efforts in championing social justice and standing in solidarity with the marginalized.
“He truly embodied humility, compassion, and a commitment to social justice. May the Lord Almighty, whom he served throughout his life, grant him eternal rest,” she added.
Among is among several African leaders who had the rare privilege of engaging with Pope Francis in one-on-one audiences, where she says he consistently demonstrated his deep spiritual presence and unwavering concern for global issues.
Pope Francis, who passed away early Monday morning at the age of 88, leaves behind a transformative legacy as the first pope from South America and the first Jesuit pontiff. His decade-long papacy was marked by calls for inclusivity, peace, and mercy within the Catholic Church.
