On Tuesday, Speaker of Parliament Anita Among expressed her intent to engage with Ms. Nansubuga and address her concerns, shortly after Nansubuga was granted bail by the Buganda Road Chief Magistrates Court. Nansubuga had been arrested the previous Wednesday after being found at the Parliamentary gate with placards demanding the Speaker’s resignation over corruption allegations.
In a post on X this afternoon, Speaker Among clarified that she did not order Nansubuga’s arrest. She stated, “I am pleased to hear that she has been released on bail. Peaceful demonstration is a constitutional right, and I look forward to listening to her concerns. I firmly believe in the right of citizens to hold leaders accountable, just as Ms. Nansubuga was doing.”
In related news, the Buganda Road Court has remanded former Rubaga Resident City Commissioner Anderson Burora back to Luzira Prison. Burora faces charges related to comments he made against Speaker Among. His bail application is scheduled to be heard on Friday, July 12.
