Several Arrested Over Sale of Fake CHAN 2024 Tickets

Police have arrested several individuals in connection with the sale of fake and duplicate tickets ahead of Uganda’s highly anticipated CHAN 2024 clash against South Africa at Namboole Stadium on Monday.

The Local Organising Committee (LOC) confirmed that all official tickets for the crucial tie were sold out by Friday evening. However, some fans reported being duped into purchasing counterfeit physical tickets, despite repeated warnings that since Match Day One, all CHAN 2024 tickets in Uganda have only been sold online.

“Any person buying a physical ticket is either buying a fake or a duplicated ticket,” said Dr. Dennis K. Mugimba, Chairperson of the LOC’s Communications and Signage Sub-Committee. “This poses both a security and safety risk, and offenders will be apprehended.”

Police have not disclosed the exact number of suspects arrested but indicated that several were caught in possession of bundles of fake tickets. Investigations are ongoing to dismantle the networks behind the racket.

Authorities have urged fans to remain vigilant and to report anyone selling physical or duplicate tickets. Those found carrying counterfeit tickets will be denied entry to the stadium. “We urge anyone flagged at the gates to cooperate with stewards and simply turn back home,” the LOC advised.

Meanwhile, with tickets sold out, the LOC has set up Fan Parks at Café Milano in Masindi, Kyadondo Rugby Grounds in Kampala, and King’s Park Arena in Bweyogerere, where fans will enjoy free entry, live broadcasts, and entertainment starting at 3 p.m.

Over 34,000 fans have filled Namboole Stadium for each of the Uganda Cranes’ matches so far. Monday’s game will determine whether Uganda secures a place in the quarterfinals.
