Police spokesperson SP Luke Owoyesigyire confirmed that CCTV footage from the scene shows Kevin jumping into the deep end of the pool, which was at the time under the supervision of a lifeguard or trainer. The lifeguard was reportedly also attending to younger children undergoing swimming lessons.

Following a movie session that took place later that night, students noticed Kevin’s absence. A search was initiated, and his disappearance was first reported at the school dormitory. His body was discovered in the pool the following morning, Monday, August 4.

Police at Mbalala responded to the scene, recovered the body, and transported it to Mulago Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Detectives also retrieved CCTV footage for further analysis.

“One person, the lifeguard on duty at the time of the incident, is currently in police custody as we continue to investigate his role and determine what happened,” SP Owoyesigyire said.

The cause of death will be confirmed following the post-mortem results, and further scrutiny of the CCTV footage is underway to establish any negligence or foul play.

In a related development, SP Owoyesigyire addressed questions about another incident involving two students at separate schools under the same management. He confirmed that this case is also under active investigation.

“We are collecting all available evidence and will submit it to the Resident State Attorney for guidance,” he said.

However, Owoyesigyire clarified that a previous incident at Seeta High School had, after thorough investigation, been determined to be a case of suicide unless new evidence emerges.

The latest incident has sparked concern among parents and education stakeholders about student safety and supervision, particularly around potentially hazardous facilities such as swimming pools.

Police have assured the public that they will leave no stone unturned in their investigations and will take appropriate action based on the findings.
