President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has officially renewed the contract of Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP) Tom Magambo for another two years, Nile Post has learned. Magambo, who has been serving as the Director of the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID), was set to complete his tenure at the end of this month.
Sources within Uganda’s security circles confirm that the contract renewal is a strong endorsement of Magambo’s leadership and strategic direction at the CID. Since his appointment in January 2022, he has spearheaded major reforms and high-profile investigations, significantly contributing to the modernization of Uganda’s criminal justice system. Under his leadership, the CID has intensified efforts to combat organized crime, improve forensic investigations, and enhance intelligence-led policing. His tenure has also seen improved coordination between law enforcement agencies, leading to a more efficient and responsive crime investigation framework.
Reacting to the contract renewal, AIGP Magambo expressed gratitude to President Museveni for entrusting him with the responsibility to continue leading Uganda’s criminal investigations. He reiterated his commitment to upholding the rule of law, ensuring justice, and enhancing national security through professional and efficient policing. He emphasized that his priority remains strengthening the CID’s capacity to investigate and prosecute crimes effectively while fostering a justice system that is transparent, fair, and efficient in addressing crime.
Since taking over as CID Director, Magambo has overseen significant improvements in Uganda’s investigative processes. He has introduced modern forensic techniques and digital case management systems to streamline criminal investigations. His tenure has also been marked by a determined crackdown on transnational crimes, cybercrime, human trafficking, and corruption, all tackled through intelligence-driven operations. Additionally, he has strengthened partnerships with regional and international law enforcement agencies, enhancing cross-border crime prevention efforts. His commitment to capacity building has also led to the training and equipping of CID officers with modern investigative skills to enhance efficiency and professionalism.
Magambo’s contract renewal comes at a time when the Ugandan government is intensifying efforts to reform and modernize the country’s security apparatus. President Museveni has emphasized the need for a well-equipped and professional police force capable of handling contemporary security challenges. With his renewed mandate, AIGP Magambo is expected to build on the progress made in criminal investigations and further refine strategies for crime prevention, intelligence gathering, and community policing.
As Uganda continues to grapple with evolving security threats, Magambo’s leadership at the CID remains crucial in ensuring that law enforcement agencies effectively respond to crime and uphold the rule of law. His reappointment signals continuity and stability in Uganda’s security sector, reinforcing the government’s commitment to strengthening law enforcement institutions.
