Police Warn Of Festive Season Crime Spike

The Uganda Police Force has placed all security agencies on heightened alert ahead of the Christmas and New Year festivities, warning that the holiday season coincides with the 2026 General Elections period and requires increased vigilance from the public.

Addressing the media, Police Spokesperson Rusoke Kituuma said with only 10 days to Christmas and 17 days to the New Year 2026, security agencies are fully deployed to ensure peaceful and orderly celebrations across the country.

“As we usher in the Christmas festive season, the Uganda Police Force warmly extends greetings to all Ugandans and visitors. All security agencies are on heightened alert to ensure that people celebrate in peace,” Kituuma said.

He cautioned that the festive period, marked by travel, family reunions and excitement, often attracts crime including theft, house break-ins and domestic violence. Kituuma urged the public to avoid leaving homes unattended, strengthen neighbourhood watch arrangements and report suspicious persons or movements to the nearest police station.

On entertainment shows and social events, Police reminded organisers that all public gatherings must receive written clearance from the Inspector General of Police and be jointly planned with District Security Committees and other regulatory authorities.

“Venues must meet safety standards, including clear exits, firefighting equipment, first aid facilities and adequate lighting. Overcrowding will not be tolerated,” Kituuma said, warning that advertising artistes who do not attend scheduled events amounts to criminal fraud and will be investigated and prosecuted.

Police also advised organisers of overnight prayers and religious gatherings to coordinate closely with district security teams to ensure safety and order during worship sessions.

With increased travel expected on roads and water bodies, Kituuma said Police will intensify enforcement against drunk driving, reckless driving, overloading and failure to use safety gear such as seatbelts and helmets. He added that special attention will be placed on public service vehicles to protect passengers.

On water transport, Police warned operators against overloading vessels and urged them to ensure boats are seaworthy and equipped with life jackets.

The Police Spokesperson also raised concern over fire hazards associated with end-of-year activities, advising the public to switch off electrical appliances before travelling, keep firefighting equipment accessible and avoid locking children in houses.

Regarding shopping and cash management, Kituuma urged wananchi to be cautious of pickpockets, scammers and fake mobile money agents, encouraging the use of cashless transactions and verification of online sellers.

He further noted that cases of livestock theft, burglaries and property crime often increase during festive seasons and called on the public to report suspicious traders or animal movements.

On counter-terrorism, Kituuma said Uganda remains on high alert, urging the public to report unattended luggage and suspicious individuals, stay alert in crowded places such as malls, churches and bus parks, and cooperate with security personnel during searches and screenings.

“The Uganda Police Force and other security agencies remain committed to ensuring a safe, peaceful and enjoyable festive season for all. We call upon the public to celebrate responsibly, stay vigilant and work together for the safety of our communities,” Kituuma said.
