Police Report Isolated Violence, 90 Arrests During NRM Primaries

The Uganda Police Force has reported a largely peaceful conclusion to the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party primaries across the country, despite a few isolated incidents of violence and crime that resulted in injuries and arrests.

Addressing the media at Police Headquarters, ACP Kituuma Rusoke, the police spokesperson, said the majority of polling stations experienced calm and orderly voting, with security agencies deploying nationwide to ensure safety during the exercise.

“The vast majority of areas we policed today registered calmness and peaceful voting. However, we had isolated incidents of violence and crime recorded,” Rusoke said.

One of the most serious incidents occurred in Kamuli District on Wednesday night when Sowedi Igumbiye was shot dead during a police pursuit. Igumbiye was allegedly transporting a kidnapped victim, John Bosco Kaoma, in a Toyota Harrier, registration number UARR 749F. Five suspects have been arrested in connection with the case.

In Nakaseke District, a fight broke out between supporters of rival candidates Ndamira and Nyogode Enoch in Nyinghoma Town Council. During the chaos, bullets were fired, and one person, identified as Komseri Dan, sustained gunshot injuries and was rushed for treatment.

In Zombo District’s Paida Town Council, a woman was seriously injured after being attacked with bows and arrows while returning from a rally. Police are investigating the attempted murder.

Meanwhile, in Buikwe District, police arrested a suspect, Tomine Benon, after he was found in possession of a hand grenade during a security operation in Kamubezi Town Council. Authorities are probing his intentions.

Security forces also intercepted a taxi in Dokolo District carrying 14 panga-wielding individuals allegedly planning to disrupt elections in Dokolo South. All suspects were detained.

In Iganga District, 68 students alleged to be from the Law Development Centre were arrested from a house where they were reportedly being kept by a candidate to influence the vote.

ACP Rusoke confirmed that more than 90 suspects are currently in custody in connection with election-related offenses, including violence, illegal possession of weapons, and voter bribery schemes.

“We carried out these operations to ensure ultimate security for the process. We remain vigilant and committed to protecting the integrity of the elections,” he added.

The police have assured the public that investigations into all cases are ongoing, and more details will be released in due course.
