SP Kawala said preliminary investigations indicate that the child was on December 22, 2025, at about 4:30 p.m., handed over to the driver of a Toyota Hiace taxi, registration number UBM 696P, by a guide identified only as Asuman. The child was allegedly traveling to Walusubi in Mukono District.

“The driver, identified as Kalulu Bosco, was given two telephone contacts of the person who was supposed to receive the child upon arrival,” SP Kawala said.

However, upon reaching Walusubi at about 12:30 a.m., the driver reportedly attempted to contact the provided numbers, but one phone was switched off while the other was answered by a person who said it was a wrong number.

SP Kawala said the driver then decided to return with the child to Kampala, with the intention of taking her back to Tororo should the contacts remain unreachable. The child spent the night inside the vehicle.

“In the morning, as the taxi was exiting Old Taxi Park to return to Tororo, one of the passengers noticed that the child was motionless and alerted authorities,” she said.

Police registered a case of sudden death and conveyed the body to KCCA City Mortuary for a postmortem examination to establish the cause of death.

SP Kawala said it was established that the deceased was not in the company of any known relative. A search of her belongings recovered a piece of paper containing two telephone numbers and a yellow T-shirt bearing the badge of St. Anthony Parents Mukono, with the name “Kiiza” written on it.

She said efforts are ongoing to identify the deceased and trace her relatives.

SP Kawala advised parents and guardians to ensure that children travel in the company of responsible adults and are adequately supervised at all times to guarantee their safety.
