According to a statement by Kampala Metropolitan Police, the incident unfolded around 8:00 PM when officers from Nateete Police Station, on routine patrol, responded to a distress call from a man being attacked near a mobile money kiosk.
The victim, whose identity was withheld, was reportedly ambushed by a gang attempting to snatch a small black bag containing cash. As he raised an alarm, patrol officers quickly intervened, finding him engaged in a violent struggle with the attackers.
In an attempt to apprehend the suspects, one of the assailants allegedly pulled out a machete, prompting an officer to fire a warning shot. The suspects immediately fled the scene on foot and motorcycle, triggering a high-speed pursuit by the police motorcycle squad.
The chase led to the Mengo Stabex fuel station where a gunfire exchange ensued. Two of the suspects were shot dead on the spot, while a third sustained serious injuries and later died en route to Mulago Hospital. Two others, however, managed to escape on a numberless motorcycle and remain at large.
During the operation, police recovered UGX 8.4 million in cash, two mobile phones (MTN and Airtel), the victim’s national ID and house keys, as well as two motorcycles—one bearing registration number UGE 294X and another without plates. Two pangas used by the suspects were also recovered at the scene.
Kampala Metropolitan Police praised the officers for their rapid response and vigilance. Efforts are ongoing to track down the remaining suspects and dismantle the gang believed to be responsible for several robberies in the area.
Residents have applauded the police for their intervention, which they say has brought temporary relief to a community recently plagued by petty and violent crimes.
Police have urged the public to remain vigilant and continue reporting suspicious activity, as investigations continue.
