Kampala Metropolitan Police have refuted claims that the tragic death of 28-year-old Nakiwolo Sophia, a mobile money operator on Nasser Road, was linked to the group of youth that reportedly unleashed violence and theft in parts of Kampala following President Museveni’s NRM nomination on Saturday.

In a press statement released Tuesday, Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson SSP Patrick Onyango clarified that preliminary investigations point to a separate incident involving two suspects, one of whom worked closely with the deceased.
“Contrary to widespread social media reports linking the murder to Kifeesi gangs allegedly aligned to the ruling party, this was a targeted incident that took place inside a shop and not related to the earlier street violence,” Onyango stated.
According to police, the incident occurred on June 28, 2025, at about 7:20 PM, when CPS Kampala received reports that a woman had been stabbed and was lying in a pool of blood outside Freedom House, along Nkrumah Road in Civic Centre Parish, Kampala Central Division.
The deceased was later identified as Nakiwolo Sophia, a mobile money and bank agent working at Shop No. K-618. Police investigations reveal that she was attacked while reconciling the day’s transactions.
Nickson Elizah, a colleague and co-occupant of the shop, initially told police that two unidentified assailants stormed the premises, stabbed both him and the deceased, and fled with his phone. However, his account was contradicted by two security guards nearby, who reported hearing a commotion from within the shop but did not see anyone fleeing the scene.
Instead, the guards claim they witnessed Elizah pushing the bleeding Nakiwolo out of the shop, before sitting back inside. A mob later descended on Elizah, suspecting him to be the attacker, and beat him severely before police intervened.

A search of the shop by investigators led to the recovery of a blood-stained knife believed to have been used in the attack. Elizah was arrested and taken under police guard to Mulago Hospital for treatment. Another suspect, Ssemakula Abdu, was also taken into custody as investigations continue.
“We are treating this as an isolated case of murder by stabbing. We caution the public against spreading unverified claims that may mislead the investigation and incite unnecessary fear,” Onyango emphasized.
The police have urged the public to remain calm and allow the investigation to proceed, while also reaffirming that the earlier incidents of daytime robbery by alleged NRM-linked youth are being handled separately.
Nakiwolo’s body was taken to the City Mortuary for a postmortem examination.
