Police Denounce False Death Rumours Of DPC Kamugira

Police have strongly dismissed as false and malicious a viral video circulating on social media that falsely claims the Division Police Commander (DPC) of Katwe, Superintendent of Police (SP) David Kamugira, has died along Salama Road.

In a statement issued by the Deputy Police Spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan Area, Mr. Luke Owoyesigyire, authorities described the video initially circulated via TikTok—as misleading, deliberately fabricated, and intended to tarnish the reputation of SP Kamugira and disrupt police operations in Katwe Division.

“We would like to categorically state that this information is false, misleading, and malicious. Superintendent Kamugira is alive, safe, and continues to diligently perform his duties in Katwe Division,” Mr. Owoyesigyire said.

The Police believe the video is part of a broader smear campaign against the DPC, likely motivated by his recent success in cracking down on organized criminal gangs within the Katwe area. These gangs, according to the police, have in some cases been linked to individuals in the music industry.

“It is clear that the creators of this video have intentions known only to themselves. However, it appears their aim is to undermine the work of the DPC, particularly his efforts in combating gang-related crimes in the area,” Owoyesigyire added.

The Police emphasized that while such acts of misinformation are not new, the current case crosses a line by targeting a serving officer with a death hoax, which has caused unnecessary panic within the community and among law enforcement personnel.

Police have launched an active investigation to identify and apprehend the individuals behind the video. Authorities have also issued a warning to the public against spreading unverified content, especially when it affects public officials and national security.

“We urge the general public to disregard the video and treat its contents with the contempt they deserve. Investigations are underway to identify those behind this video, and they will be held accountable in accordance with the law,” the statement read.

Despite the distraction, the Kampala Metropolitan Police reaffirmed its commitment to fighting crime and ensuring the safety of residents in the Katwe area and beyond.

SP Kamugira, is better known for his hands-on approach to community policing and crime suppression.
