In a statement issued Sunday evening, police warned that the proposed launch at the NUP headquarters in Kampala would not be permitted, citing concerns over maintaining public order. Organizers and supporters were formally cautioned against participating in or facilitating any activities related to the event.

“This decision has been taken in the interest of maintaining public order,” the police statement read, urging all parties to comply with the directive.

The move immediately drew fire from NUP leadership. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Bobi Wine denounced the police action, accusing the authorities of applying “double standards” to stifle opposition activities while allowing similar events organized by regime allies to proceed without interference.

“The partisan regime police is moving to block our weekly press conference slated for tomorrow, at which we had planned to launch our mobilization for the forthcoming youth elections,” Bobi Wine wrote. “We condemn and protest these double standards in the strongest terms possible, and call upon all Ugandans to firmly resist them!”

NUP had planned to unveil a major youth mobilization drive ahead of the 2025 youth elections, hoping to energize young voters and activists critical of President Yoweri Museveni’s government.

As of Sunday night, it remained unclear whether NUP would proceed with its planned press conference through alternative means or postpone the event altogether.

The situation is developing.
