Police spokesperson Rusoke Kituuma say the vehicle Kazibwe was travelling in a Toyota Ractis with registration number UBL 406B was found loaded with suspected stolen electric cables, meters, and other related items.
“This is just one of several ongoing operations aimed at curbing the theft of electricity infrastructure. We’ve already made over nine arrests in Mukono alone,” said police officials during a press briefing.
Authorities say the theft of electricity equipment has become a major problem, crippling service delivery and endangering communities. Police have warned that the culprits often pose as technicians from utility companies, using this disguise to vandalize and steal infrastructure, often during the night.
“Should you notice any activity that seems suspicious, especially at night, do not hesitate to alert the police or the responsible utility company,” Rusoke advised. “We verify such operations, and if they are legitimate, we allow the technicians to proceed. But if they are not, we make immediate arrests.”
The Uganda Police Force has called on the public to remain vigilant and participate in safeguarding public infrastructure by reporting suspicious activity promptly.
Kazibwe is currently in custody as investigations continue.
