A total of 114 aspirants, including 15 women, have so far picked nomination forms from the Electoral Commission (EC) to contest in the 2026 presidential elections, the Commission has confirmed.
According to EC spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi, the figures were recorded by 3 p.m. on Wednesday, the third day of issuing nomination documents. Of the 114 aspirants, five represent political parties, while the rest are independents.
Political parties that have picked forms include the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), Conservative Party, the National Economic Empowerment Dialogue (NEED), and the Uganda Economic Party, which is in the process of changing its name to the Common Man’s Party.

Mucunguzi explained that under Uganda’s multiparty political system, presidential aspirants can either be sponsored by a political party or run as independents, as provided for in the law.
Those who have picked the forms have been dispatched to begin the first stage of the nomination process collecting at least 100 signatures from supporters in two-thirds of Uganda’s districts, which translates to 98 districts and a total of 9,800 signatures.
“We are informing authorities in districts, including security and police, that when they see individuals carrying EC-issued forms seeking signatures, they should treat them as people engaged in lawful, constitutional work and offer them any necessary support,” Mucunguzi said.
Presidential nominations are scheduled to take place on September 23 and 24, 2025.
