PFF Declares ‘Besigye Prayer Week’ to Demand Release of Political Prisoners

The People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) has declared a nationwide “Besigye Prayer Week” beginning today, calling on Ugandans to dedicate daily prayers to Dr Kizza Besigye and all political detainees currently held across the country.

Speaking at the PFF headquarters on Monday, interim president Erias Lukwago said the initiative is intended to rally moral and spiritual support for the detained opposition figure and dozens of other Ugandans facing what the group describes as politically motivated charges.

Lukwago said the prayer week will run across all regions and will be observed in homes, places of worship and at every political gathering during the ongoing election season.

“We have decided to declare the Besigye Prayer Week starting today,” Lukwago said. “In all your prayers, private and public, we ask you to have Dr Besigye at heart. At every campaign rally or meeting, we urge candidates to begin with a prayer for him and for all political prisoners.”

He emphasised that the appeal extends beyond PFF supporters to all “peace-loving Ugandans” across political formations.

Lukwago revealed that several senior opposition leaders are now also listed as “accomplices” in the treason case involving Dr Besigye and his aide, Hajj Obeid Lutale. The two were arrested a year ago and have since been held on treason charges that are yet to proceed to full trial.

“This is a politically charged season. Many of us are now on the radar,” Lukwago said, naming himself along with Dr Samuel Lubega, Salam Musumba and others as individuals cited in the ongoing case.
“They are monitoring us and can pounce on us at any time.”

The PFF leader drew parallels with past kidnaps of opposition activists, including the widely publicised arrest of the “Besigye 36,” warning that no opposition figure is safe under the current political climate.

He urged candidates within PFF and other opposition parties to make the release of political prisoners a central theme of their campaigns.

“Everything we do begins with freedom,” Lukwago said. “Let this issue be central in all our messages. We are all in danger if we do not confront this situation together.”

Dr Besigye and Lutale remain on remand, and their case—currently before the High Court—has not moved to substantive hearing since their extradition from Nairobi in 2024.

PFF said the prayer week will conclude with a national interfaith service next Sunday.
