Police has revealed that over 4000 persons were arrested from the 27 regions in minor cases as the country held New Year’s Day festivities.
The police spokesperson Fred Enanga, however, insisted that the country was largely peaceful as 2024 was ushered in.
In his speech he said that the End of year New Year celebrations were spread out over 5200 venues including 2616 fireworks displays.
Addressing journalists at police headquarters in Naguru Fred Enanga the police spokesperson revealed that the joint security forces were extra vigilant following the recent ADF attacks in Kamwenge district.
Even though Enanga contends that the festivities were largely peaceful, 55 reportable incidences were recorded and these resulted in the death of 31 persons
Uganda is set to host the 19th Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and the third South Summit simultaneously in January 2024, with over 120 global leaders expected to converge in Kampala for these high-level diplomatic gatherings. Enanga says the police and other sister security agencies pledge to deliver beyond expectations.
In a related development, Luke Oweyesigire the deputy police spokesperson, of Kampala Metropolitan says 300 suspects are set to be arraigned before courts of law for different offenses committed during the end of year new year celebration. Oweyesigire emphasizes that 57 of these were arrested from the Enkuuka music festival.
Luke Oweyesigire has also revealed that they are hunting for an individual suspected to have caused the fire that gutted a building yesterday in Makerere Kavule
