Over 20 Aspirants Locked Out as EC Closes Presidential Nomination

The Electoral Commission (EC) has officially closed the nomination exercise for the 2026 presidential election, confirming only eight candidates out of more than 35 who had submitted supporters’ signatures. This leaves over 25 aspirants disqualified, among them both familiar names and new faces who had hoped to make history.

The confirmed eight include: incumbent President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni (NRM), Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu (NUP), Gen. Mugisha Muntu (ANT), Nathan Nandala Mafabi (FDC), Elton Joseph Mabirizi (CP), Robert Kasibante (NPP), Henry Byamukama, Frank Bulira Kabinga (RPP), and Mubarak Munyagwa Sserunga (CMP).

But for the majority, the journey ended in disappointment. Among those locked out are prominent former contenders such as John Katumba, who stunned many with his 2021 bid; Joseph Kabuleta, a journalist-turned-politician; Willy Mayambala, known for his unexpected run in the last election; and Nancy Kalembe, the only woman candidate in 2021.

This time, Nankambwe Pauline, who had sought to become the only female aspirant in 2026, also failed to secure a nomination. Others who fell short include David William Magezi, whose story from street kid to presidential hopeful had gained attention; Kalyesubula Benjamin; Muhamudu Abdala; Henry Byamukama Katabazi, Mawajje Francis; Mutto Milton; Kasaijja Wycliff Kizza; and Bbaale Charles. Ssali Jamil Sulaiman, who attempted to stand on the COSEVO ticket, Muhammad Nsereko former Kampala MP and president of the Ecological Party was also rejected.

The EC cited failure to meet requirements, particularly in endorsement signatures across at least 98 districts, as the main reason many aspirants were left out. However, some opposition voices accused the Commission of bias and intimidation during the verification exercise.

The 2026 ballot will now feature only male candidates, marking the first election in decades without a woman contender. Historically, women like Miria Obote (2006), Betty Olive Kamya (2006), Maureen Kyalya Waluube (2016), and Nancy Kalembe (2021) have carried the torch for female representation at the highest level.

With campaigns officially set to begin on September 29, 2025, the stage is set for a heated contest between Museveni, who has ruled since 1986, and a field of challengers led by Bobi Wine, Gen. Muntu, and Nandala Mafabi.
