Over 170 Suspects Arrested in Kampala Anti-Crime Crackdown

The Kampala Metropolitan Police have arrested more than 170 suspects in a series of coordinated operations across several divisions aimed at dismantling criminal gangs and curbing rising incidents of phone snatching, burglary, and drug abuse.

According to the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, SSP Patrick Onyango, the operations, conducted between November 3 and 4, 2025, targeted known criminal hideouts in areas such as Kisenyi, Ntinda, Bweyogerere, Nansana, and Kajjansi. The crackdown involved joint efforts between police, local leaders, and intelligence teams, focusing on suspects involved in robberies, narcotics, and related offenses.

In Old Kampala Division, police conducted a major night operation on November 3 between 8:30 p.m. and 2:00 a.m., targeting areas of Wagaba Zone in Rubaga Parish, Owino, Kisenyi, Musajjalumbwa, Usafi, and Kafumbe Mukasa. A total of 75 suspects were arrested and detained at various police stations including Old Kampala, Usafi, and Owino. They face charges of possession of dangerous weapons, intent to commit a felony, and possession of opium.

In Kira Road Division, an operation carried out on November 4 in Ntinda led to the arrest of 13 suspects accused of frequenting opium smoking places and attacking unsuspecting citizens, especially along the Northern Bypass. Police said the suspects are being detained at Kira Road Police Division pending further investigations.

Under the Kira Division, a targeted operation in Bweyogerere Central Zone on November 3 resulted in the arrest of seven suspects accused of selling and using opium while planning criminal activities. Another operation in Kitikutwe and Kungu Zone, Kira Municipality, saw 12 suspects arrested with exhibits of rolled and non-rolled opium and a panga believed to be used in robberies. All suspects face narcotics-related charges.

In Nansana Division, a joint intelligence-led operation on November 3 in Nabweru, Kiwogo, and Ganda led to the arrest of 34 suspects believed to be behind a wave of phone snatching, assaults, and burglaries. Police recovered opium and marijuana from the suspects, who are being held at Lubigi Police Station on charges of drug possession.

In Jinja Road Division, police working with local defense units arrested 16 male suspects during an operation in Katoogo and Kago, Kinawataka, Mbuya I Parish, Nakawa Division. The suspects, who were found smoking opium in a known black spot, were charged with public nuisance.

Meanwhile, in Kajjansi Division, police conducted an extensive sweep between 7:00 p.m. and 12:30 a.m. in Bweya, Jjanyi, and Kitende A. A total of 21 suspects were arrested from black spots identified by crime intelligence as bases for early-morning snatchers. Police recovered 289 sticks of marijuana, marijuana seeds, drug paraphernalia, and Shs35,800 believed to be proceeds from drug sales.

SSP Onyango said the operations were successful and will continue as part of a sustained effort to eliminate criminal networks within the Kampala Metropolitan area.

“A lot of these crimes are fueled by group influence and drug use. We have identified black spots that harbor wrongdoers, and we shall continue with such operations to maintain safety and security,” he said.

Police have urged the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement by reporting suspicious activities in their communities.
