Authorities say the fire started while the children’s mother had stepped out briefly to fetch water from a nearby tap, leaving the one-year-old and her four-year-old brother inside the house.
Preliminary findings show that the older child ran to alert the mother about the fire, but by the time she returned, the blaze had intensified and the roof had collapsed on the baby.
“There was no electricity at the time of the fire outbreak,” SP Kawala said, adding that investigators are working to determine the exact cause of the fire.
Police fire brigade teams responded quickly and managed to extinguish the flames. The body of the deceased has been taken to Mulago mortuary for postmortem.
Investigations are ongoing.
