According to a statement issued by the Traffic Police Directorate, the crash involved motor vehicle UBM 672G, whose driver is currently on the run. Preliminary investigations indicate that the driver was over speeding and carrying passengers in a dangerously unsafe manner when the vehicle lost control, struck a pavement, and overturned—killing one passenger on the spot.

“Six others were injured in the crash, and we are pursuing the driver who abandoned the scene,” said the Traffic Police spokesperson. “This vehicle had already been flagged earlier in the day at Lungala in Mpigi for multiple traffic violations.”

Authorities revealed that UBM 672G had been intercepted alongside three other vehicles—UBG 649K, UBM 631E, and UAR 351Z—for serious infractions, including operating without a valid license, carrying passengers in unsafe positions, obscuring registration plates, and reckless driving. While drivers of the other vehicles complied with police directives and were detained at Mpigi Police Station, the driver of UBM 672G defied orders and continued driving—resulting in the fatal crash.

Police have issued a stern warning to all drivers and operators, especially during the busy season, to comply with traffic laws and directives from officers. “What may seem like an inconvenience at the time could actually be a critical life-saving intervention,” the spokesperson added.

The Traffic Police has also urged the public to avoid using unauthorized or poorly maintained vehicles and called on all road users to prioritize safety over convenience.

“We must all take road safety seriously. These are preventable tragedies, and every life lost is one too many,” the statement concluded.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing, and efforts to apprehend the fleeing driver are underway.
